How to determine if the metal ring gasket is damaged?

The presence or absence of damage to metal ring gasket hyperlinks should be determined based on visual inspection, functional testing, and professional evaluation.


Visually, it is divided into physical damage and pollution aging. Physical damage mainly includes cracks/fractures, observe whether there are cracks or fracture marks on the surface and edges of the gasket (especially pay attention to the contact area of the sealing surface); Deformation/indentation, check for permanent flattening, distortion, or uneven thickness caused by overpressure (compared to original dimensions); Corrosion rust stains may appear on the stainless steel ring gasket in a corrosive environment, and it is necessary to focus on inspecting the flange contact surface. Pollution aging includes the infiltration of media, oil stains, and chemical substances into the interior of the gasket, causing material expansion or discoloration; Then there is hardening and loss of elasticity, which can be detected by hand touch. If the metal flexibility is lost and the texture is brittle and hard, it indicates that the elasticity has failed.


Functionally, it can be verified through sealing and elastic recovery testing. When the equipment is running, if there is medium leakage (liquid/gas), abnormal water stains or corrosion marks at the flange connection, and the pressure is maintained for 10 minutes after pressurization, if the pressure gauge drops by more than 5% or there is visual leakage, it will be considered as failure. Elastic recovery test is to measure the thickness in a free state after disassembly, and compare the rebound after compression. If the rebound rate is less than 80%, it needs to be replaced.


In addition to these, there are also professional testing methods: instrument analysis, non-destructive testing (ultrasonic or magnetic particle testing for hidden defects such as internal cracks and pores), and metallographic experiments (laboratory analysis for intergranular corrosion or fatigue damage of materials). According to the standard HG 20633/20612, check whether the dimensional tolerance, hardness (Brinell hardness ≥ HB 120), and pressure resistance level meet the standards.
Before disassembly, it is necessary to relieve pressure and cool down, and wear cut resistant gloves and goggles during inspection.
