Introduction to the concept and classification of metal ring gaskets

Metal ring gasket is a solid metal gasket processed from metal material with a cross-sectional shape of octagonal or elliptical, which has a radial self tightening sealing effect. Therefore, the metal ring gasket is in contact with the inner and outer sides (mainly the outer side) of the flange trapezoidal groove, and is sealed by compression.

Metal ring gaskets were first used in the boiler industry in the 1920s for sealing manhole covers, high-pressure vessels, and other containers. They have since been particularly valued in petroleum production and refining industries. With the increase in temperature and pressure of steam power units, the use of metal ring gaskets has become increasingly widespread. The nominal pressure suitable for metal ring gaskets is 2.0~42.0MPa.

Metal ring gaskets are divided into two types: octagonal ring gaskets and elliptical gaskets. Metal ring gaskets are divided into two structures based on their cross-sectional shape: octagonal and elliptical.

The octagonal ring gasket matches the flange groove, mainly manifested as surface contact. Compared with the elliptical ring gasket, although it is not easy to achieve a tight fit with the flange groove, it can be reused, and because the cross-section is composed of straight lines, it is easy to process. The elliptical ring gasket is in line contact with the flange groove, with good sealing performance, but high machining accuracy is required, which increases manufacturing costs. At the same time, the elliptical ring gasket cannot be reused.

There are many types of RTJ gaskets, including R Gasket,RX Gasket,BX Gasket, SBX Gasket,IX Gasket, and various customized products. We will do more sharing about ring joint gasket.
