How to master the fastening force of metal ring gaskets

The control of the tightening force for metal ring gaskets requires the implementation of pre-tightening and stepwise loading. The key lies in maintaining the axial compressive force within the range of 70%-80% of the material’s yield strength to avoid plastic deformation.

During installation, the diagonal step tightening method should be employed. The initial pre-tightening torque should be controlled at 30% of the design value, then increased to 60% during the second loading, and finally reach the target torque of 100%. The loading interval should not be less than 10 minutes to eliminate stress concentration. For high-pressure conditions, a hydraulic tensioner or torque-rotation method should be used in conjunction to ensure that the gasket compression rate remains between 15% and 25%. Overpressure can lead to permanent deformation of the sealing surface, while underpressure can cause leakage.

During the tightening process, it is necessary to monitor the changes in flange spacing in real time, using a laser range finder to ensure that the deviation at each point does not exceed 0.1mm. Due to the stress relaxation characteristics of the metal ring gasket, it is required to retighten after 24 hours of operation, at which point the torque decay is about 10%-15%. Compensatory tightening at 110% of the original torque value is necessary. In high-temperature environments, differences in thermal expansion coefficients should be considered, and it is recommended to add a torque margin of 5%-8% based on the tightening at room temperature.

There are many types of RTJ gaskets, including R Gasket,RX Gasket,BX Gasket, SBX Gasket,IX Gasket, flange connections, and various customized products. We will do more sharing about ring joint gasket.
