RTJ (Ring Type Joint) gaskets are vital high-pressure sealing parts for oil, gas and petrochemical plants. Rigorous incoming inspection is crucial to avoid defective materials, dimensional errors and unqualified products that lead to flange leakage, operational failure and potential safety risks. This guide covers the standard and practical incoming acceptance process for RTJ gaskets.
1. Document Verification
Match all shipping documents with the purchase order to ensure consistent information on packing details, quantities, part numbers and product specifications. Complete and official certification documents from manufacturers are mandatory for acceptance, including full test reports that cover chemical composition, mechanical properties and hardness performance. For corrosive sulfur-containing working environments, exclusive compliance documents for such special service conditions must be provided as a necessary acceptance condition.
2. Visual Inspection
Check that product packaging is intact and moisture-proof to prevent damage during transportation. Examine the gasket surface carefully to ensure no rust, oxidation, scratches, dents or machining burrs. Qualified RTJ gaskets are marked with clear, permanent and non-fading information including manufacturer brand, material grade and product type. All markings shall not produce surface indentations that impair sealing performance.
3. Dimensional Inspection
Check the outer diameter, inner diameter and overall height of RTJ gaskets to ensure full compliance with standard dimensional tolerances. Inspect the symmetry and machining uniformity of octagonal or oval cross-sections. For bulk batch orders, adopt conventional sampling inspection methods to guarantee stable and consistent product dimensions across the whole batch.
4. Hardness Testing (Core Critical Check)
Test gasket hardness with professional portable testing equipment to verify it meets corresponding material performance requirements. A core industry principle for RTJ gasket application is that the gasket hardness must be appropriately lower than the matched flange hardness. This allows the metal gasket to deform preferentially under bolt tightening pressure, form tight metal-to-metal sealing, and effectively protect the flange surface from abrasion and damage, which is a key acceptance standard for high-pressure sealing connections.
5. Special Service Inspection
For corrosive working conditions, strictly verify material and document compliance with special service requirements to avoid gasket cracking and failure caused by medium corrosion. For offshore, refinery and other high-pressure critical working scenarios, professional third-party non-destructive testing is required to confirm product quality. Record all inspection processes and test results completely. All unqualified products will be clearly marked, isolated and rejected to ensure only eligible products are put into storage and put into use.
There are many types of RTJ gaskets, including R Gasket,RX Gasket,BX Gasket, SBX Gasket,IX Gasket, flange connections, and various customized products. We will do more sharing about ring joint gasket.
