ASME B16.20 defines three core RTJ gasket designs for high-pressure sealing services.
R type – The conventional basic design, suitable for general high-pressure and high-temperature applications. It is available in oval and octagonal cross-sections, and marked with standard R numbers (e.g., R-31) to match corresponding flange groove dimensions and pressure classes. The octagonal profile has become the modern industry standard for better sealing stability.
RX type – A pressure-energized upgraded version of the standard R type, fully interchangeable and fits the same flange grooves as R gaskets. System internal pressure acts on the gasket’s back face to boost contact stress and enhance sealing performance. RX82 to RX91 gaskets are manufactured with pressure-equalizing holes to relieve trapped pressure.
BX type – Engineered for extreme high-pressure and critical subsea / wellhead conditions. Equipped with built-in pressure-balance holes to prevent pressure lock and ensure reliable installation. BX gaskets are uniquely designed to match API 6BX flanges only, and not interchangeable with R or RX type gaskets.
There are many types of RTJ gaskets, including R Gasket,RX Gasket,BX Gasket, SBX Gasket,IX Gasket, flange connections, and various customized products. We will do more sharing about ring joint gasket.
